What to Expect on your Brixham Fish Market Tour and Day Sail experience:

Now in it’s 8th year, Brixham Fish Market Tours are proving to be very popular, even with the early start of 5.30am!  If your fish eating experience does not extend beyond cod, haddock, salmon and mackerel then the Brixham Fish Market tour is for you, where you could see over 40 different types of fish fresh off the trawlers at the live auctions.

Following your insight into the world of the modern fishing industry, you will be transported back in time to the victorian era when the Brixham sailing fishing fleet totalled over 300 vessels!

You will be escorted to board the fully restored 1895 trawler Pilgrim of Brixham moored on the Town Pontoon close to where she was originally built by the Uphams Shipyard.

As you slip lines to glide away from land, be sure to look back at Brixham and it’s picture postcard fishing port with pretty colour-washed fishermens cottages rising up around the old harbour. It is home port to Pilgrim BM45 along with many other working, and pleasure boats . There is always plenty to see as other heritage and classic sailing boats as well as fishing trawlers and day boats bustle in and around the busy harbour.

Because of weather, wind and tide, no two trips are exactly the same. However, a typical day sail cruise will take us round the small coves and interesting wildlife sites around Torbay. Once onboard, we welcome you with freshly brewed Tea and Coffee and a freshly prepared lunch and afternoon tea will also be served to you during your time onboard.

As we sail along, either sit back and relax or help the crew hoist the sails or even take the helm – The choice is yours!

Torbay as a whole was once a strategic naval anchorage, which was protected from the French, by a Napoleonic Fort built between 1794 and 1804 on Berry Head.

To the South East of Brixham you can see this dramatic limestone headland which is now designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Its nature reserve it is home to a sea bird colony of guillemots, black legged kittiwakes, kestrels and seagulls.

The lighthouse on Berry Head, built in 1906 has the distinction of being the smallest but highest sighted lighthouse in the British Isles.  At just 16 feet high its white light can be seen for over, 14 nautical miles.

Many of our bay sails are accompanied by dolphins and pilot whales as the South Devon coast is a haven for many marine wildlife visitors as well as holidaymakers!

After sailing around Torbay which offers lots of great photo opportunities, we return home to Brixham, where the half mile long breakwater protects the harbour, with its own lighthouse.  Its Red light can be seen for 18 nautical miles, welcoming all manner of seafaring vessels into this historic port since 1916.
