TORBAY AIRSHOW – Brixham Weekend Special

Enjoy the best seats in the house for the Torbay Airshow. A really special weekend onboard the jewel in the crown of the Devon Heritage Sailing Fleet – Pilgrim BM45.

Sail around Torbay in Devon, with a unique experience from the deck of one of the original sail powered trawlers to have been built and rigged in the port back in 1895.

During  this weekend sailing experience you will have the opportunity to enjoy the very best that the South Devon coastline has to offer combined with spectacular air displays and fly pasts from aircraft throughout the decades.

What to Expect on your unique weekend:

You will find Pilgrim moored on the Town Pontoon close to where she was originally built by the Uphams Shipyard.

As you slip lines to begin your day, be sure to look back at Brixham and it’s picture postcard fishing port with pretty colour-washed fishermens cottages rising up around the old harbour. It is home port to Pilgrim BM45 along with many other working, and pleasure boats . There is always plenty to see as other heritage and classic sailing boats as well as fishing trawlers and day boats bustle in and around the busy harbour.

Because of weather, wind and tide, no two trips are exactly the same. However, this special weekend of sailing and sights in the skies will aim to give you the most amazing vantage point to see all the thrilling air displays planned for the Torbay Airshow weekend.

Once onboard, we welcome you with freshly brewed Tea or Coffee,(and maybe even a slice of our cooks homemade traybake!) From then on all your meals and snacks will be cooked and served to you throughout your stay.

As we sail around the Torbay, Babbacombe and Teign area, you can either either sit back and relax or help the crew hoist the sails or even take the helm – The choice is yours! Please be sure to bring your camera!

Points of Interest During Torbay Airshow Experience:

Most of the sailing will be done during the mornings on this trip – leaving the afternoons free to enjoy the show!

Torbay as a whole was once a strategic naval anchorage, which was protected from the French, by a Napoleonic Fort built between 1794 and 1804 on Berry Head.

To the South East of Brixham you can see this dramatic limestone headland with its lighthouse built in 1906. This whole area is now designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty, home to guillemots, black legged kittiwakes, kestrels and seagulls. Many of our day sails are also accompanied by dolphins and pilot whales as the South Devon coast is a haven for many marine wildlife visitors as well as holidaymakers!

After a mornings sailing, we will anchor each day outside the flight exclusion zone (as required by the Torbay Airshow organisers and Torbay Harbour Authority) to enjoy a freshly prepared lunch and await the air displays.

The flying is programmed to last for approx 3 hrs from 2.00pm – 5.00pm so there will be plenty to see and photograph!

Among the many visiting aircraft expected will be:

  • The world’s premier Aerobatic Team The Red Arrows
  • The Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4
  • The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight which includes the Hawker Hurricane, Avro Lancaster and a Spitfire.
  • The Blades full-time civilian aerobatic display team based in the UK, made up entirely of former RAF Red Arrows pilots.
  • Breitling Wingwalkers, the world’s only aerobatic biplane formation wingwalking team.As the airshow draws to a close we will serve you a delicious Devon Cream Tea to round off the afternoon before returning to port past Brixhams protective breakwater and lighthouse built in 1916.
